The Nippon Foundation is a non-profit philanthropic organization that has been dedicated to the ocean since 1962. Working on a global scale, the Nippon Foundation engages governments, academia and businesses to develop human capacity and foster innovative solutions to complex ocean issues.
The foundation collaborated with the Japan Coast Guard in 2000 to co-host the Regional Conference on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships, which led to the first Heads of Asian Coast Guard Agencies Meeting in 2004. Since this first meeting, HACGAM has been held almost every year.
Seeing the need to tackle growing ocean issues at a global level, The Nippon Foundation and the Japan Coast Guard held the first Coast Guard Global Summit (CGGS) in 2017, where participants explored emerging roles of coast guards and opportunities for new partnerships. Since then, the foundation has co-hosted the 1st CGGS-Working Level Meeting (WLM) in 2018, the 2nd CGGS in 2019, the 2nd CGGS- WLM in 2021, the Online Symposium in 2022 and the 3rd CGGS in 2023.
